Why Sagrada Família tops every Barcelona itinerary
Antoni Gaudí’s unfinished basilica is the single most-visited monument in Spain — and arguably the most ambitious building project of the modern era. Construction began in 1882 and the central Tower of Jesus Christ is scheduled to top out in the next few years, so every visit is a chance to see history in motion.
Inside, soaring tree-like columns refract light through stained glass into pools of orange, blue and violet. It’s an experience photos genuinely cannot capture — plan at least 90 minutes inside to do it justice.
Tickets, opening hours and what to book
All visits require a timed entry ticket purchased in advance from the official sagradafamilia.org site. The basic basilica ticket starts around €26, while the combined ticket including tower access (Nativity or Passion) runs €36–40 and is worth every euro for the views.
Opening hours are typically 9:00–20:00 in summer and 9:00–18:00 in winter. The first slot of the day (9:00) and the last two hours before closing are noticeably calmer.
How to get to Sagrada Família from Barcelona Airport
Sagrada Família sits in the Eixample district at C/ Mallorca 401. From Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN), it’s roughly 18 km — about 25 minutes by taxi outside rush hour, or up to an hour by metro with one transfer and a heavy suitcase.
If you’re arriving and want to drop bags at a nearby hotel before sightseeing, a fixed-price airport taxi is the simplest option. Use our booking widget to lock in a price in advance — no meter, no luggage surcharge.
Insider tips
- Book the earliest morning slot (9:00) for the smallest crowds and best light through the Nativity façade.
- Add tower access — the elevator up and stairs down are the city’s most underrated photo opportunity.
- Bring a light jacket: the basilica interior is noticeably cooler than the street, even in summer.
