Why Montjuïc deserves a full day
The hill of Montjuïc rises 173 m above the harbor and packs in more than any other district: Olympic venues from 1992, the cliff-top Montjuïc Castle, the National Art Museum (MNAC), the Joan Miró Foundation, lush gardens and the show-stopping Magic Fountain.
The Magic Fountain — show times
The free Magic Fountain show in front of the Palau Nacional is one of Barcelona’s must-see experiences. Schedule varies by season — typically Thursday–Saturday evenings in summer (21:00–22:00) and Friday–Saturday in winter (20:00–21:00). Check bcn.cat the day of your visit; the fountain is occasionally closed for water restrictions.
How to plan your Montjuïc day
Take a taxi up to the Castle (parking right at the entrance), walk down through the gardens to the Olympic Stadium, visit MNAC, then end at the Magic Fountain after dinner. From the cruise port at WTC, a Montjuïc transfer takes 5 minutes — perfect for short stops.
Insider tips
- The Telefèric de Montjuïc cable car offers the best aerial views — go just before sunset.
- MNAC’s rooftop terrace (€2 entry) is a hidden Barcelona viewpoint.
- Don’t try to walk up the hill in summer — taxi or bus 150 from Plaça d’Espanya.
